Design Fundamentals: Using Natural Stone in the Bathroom

We absolutely love natural stone and use it frequently on our projects. Natural stone is an incredibly versatile material offering an endless range of options for all styles. While we love natural stone in a variety of areas, we particularly love how it enhances a bathroom. Depending on the material you choose, natural stone can be bold and vibrant or calming and neutral, contemporary or traditional. The same stone can have a vastly different look depending on where you use it, and how – a large polished slab has a very different feel to a small mosaic tile, for example. These bathrooms show just a few of the options for using natural stone.

In this contemporary bathroom, travertine tiles on the walls add warmth and softness to what would otherwise be a cool, minimalistic space.

In this bathroom, graphic black-and-white striped Zebrino marble makes a bold statement on a clean-lined bathtub.

In this contemporary bathroom, a clean-lined yet warm wood vanity shows another side of Zebrino.

In this organic contemporary bathroom, different types and shades of stone are combined for a rich look. On the shower walls, keeping the stone patterning similar keeps the mix of tones feeling calm, rather than chaotic – we love how it has the warmth of wood or horn.

In this contemporary bathroom, white marble in a basic square tile has a big impact when it’s repeated on floor, walls, and ceiling.

In this bathroom, a vibrantly patterned black and white stone adds drama, while a minimalist vanity and sleek contemporary fixtures complement the stone without detracting from it.

We love onyx for its rich color and softly undulating veining patterns. In this bathroom, several types of onyx are combined to create a stunning space. By using more muted stones on the floor and keeping the strongest pattern on the walls, this bathroom avoids feeling too busy or overpowering. This patterned onyx beautifully illustrates one of our favorite things about natural stone – no two pieces are exactly alike, making each unique piece a kind of fingerprint for your home.

This opulent  bathroom showcases another side of stone with onyx slab walls, a marble tub, and a multi-stone tile floor. We love how the repetition of colors and use of geometric motifs gives this layered space a bold, extravagantly chic feel.

At our Martin Lane project, we mixed pewter grey limestone, teak, and bookmatched Calacatta Borghini gold marble for a warm, contemporary floor and shower treatment. What is bookmatching? It’s one of our favorite techniques, and it’s the practice of matching two or more slabs of stone, resulting in adjoining surfaces that mirror each other (like an opened book). When the veins of these slabs are matched up, the effect is symmetric, dramatic, and gorgeous! We love using this technique with stones that have strong natural veins like marble, granite, or onyx.
